The legal representatives for attorney Odila Castillo Bonilla released a strong declaration on October 1st, firmly denying the claims that have been circulating in several Panamanian newspapers.
The defense described these articles as intentional assaults, motivated by individual financial interests, aimed at tarnishing Castillo’s professional image and personal character.
Defense for Castillo claims absence of basis and infringement of rights
Carlos Carrillo, a representative from Castillo’s legal team, asserted that the allegations lack basis and are intended to hinder the careers of the young attorney and her associate. He highlighted that hidden financial motives are driving these attacks, aiming to gain from the defamation of Castillo.
The defense pointed out that this is not the attorney’s first experience with media harassment. They referenced a comparable event from 2021, when a Panamanian outlet released false information about an alleged arrest of Castillo, which was later retracted.
Half-truths and breach of confidentiality
The legal team stated that both the recent accusations and those from 2021 are based on “partial truths,” distorted to jeopardize the professional practice of attorney Odila Castillo. They further claimed that the shared information breaches confidentiality principles, as some aspects of the inquiry stem from a previously resolved family issue.
Confidential information, such as migration records and tax returns, was also revealed—data that, according to the defense, was acquired through illegal means.
Unauthorized surveillance and continuing legal proceedings
The defense revealed that Castillo has been a victim of GPS monitoring, which represents a blatant infringement of her privacy and an instance of illegal surveillance. Carrillo emphasized that his client’s basic rights, as protected by the Panamanian Constitution and relevant legislation, have been violated.
He declared that all required legal measures will be taken to determine accountability for the harm caused and any potential harm intended. The legal team is steadfast in its dedication to defending Castillo and ensuring that those behind this defamation effort are held accountable.
